Farewell – and thanks to all at post office
Published 16 May 2008
I HAVE lived in the Warwick Road area for 46 years and the Warwick Road Post Office has served the citizens of Carlisle and the local community all those years, and many years before that.WITH reference to the recent publicity regarding the proposed demolition of the old High School building in Carlisle, I would like to put forward the following points.IN RESPONSE to the letter on the subject of election apathy (The Cumberland News, May 9), may I first of all say that I am sorry the writers felt my leaflet was ‘less than wonderful’.I WAS recently charged £3.80p for a bottle of ordinary cider at Carlisle’s Sands Centre when attending a concert. WAS the Carlisle Renaissance Board set up to compete with the internet-based virtual world called ‘Second Life’ – an online game where anyone, such as a member of a government quango or a wealthy businessman, is given a city to play with?I WRITE on the vexed subject of the National Health Service.I WOULD just like to say how much I enjoyed the charity night which was held at St Augustine’s Church, Stanwix in Carlisle last Friday.EVERY spring, the members of Soroptimist International of Carlisle distribute boxes of daffodil lapel badges to shops and other outlets in the area to raise funds for Marie Curie Cancer Care. RE: THE opening of the Bill Johnston Memorial Garden which was reported in The Cumberland News, (May 9), many residents and the town councillors of Silloth are at a loss as to why no notification was given to the council to allow their attendance.ASHLEY Boon, in his defence of grouse moors, is obviously suffering from selective amnesia (The Cumberland News, May 9). n IN HIS rush to defend the indefensible, I wonder if Mr Ashley Boon actually read what he wrote?

Cumbria Vision makes itself appear blinkered
Published 9 May 2008
IT IS appropriate that Roger Liddle, chairman of Cumbria Vision, should express concern about the criticism in the editorial of The Cumberland News (April 25), that the agricultural aspect of economic life in Cumbria had been overlooked in the new Cumbria Vision strategy set out at its Economic Summit 2008 conference.
A city since 1133
Published 2 May 2008
While it is entirely appropriate for Carlisle to celebrate the 850th anniversary of the granting of a Charter by King Henry II in 1158 (The Cumberland News, April 25), this should not obscure the fact that it had already become a city in 1133.

Desire to secure cheap land
Published 2 May 2008
Given some of the recent commentary surrounding Carlisle Airport, an observer could be forgiven for thinking that Carlisle City Council had initially rejected the application and that WA Developments had a strong desire to upgrade the facilities.
Surprising belief about moorland birds
Published 2 May 2008
In your article ‘Flap over flagship reserve’s success’, David O’Hara stated that the RSPB is happy with its populations of important moorland birds at Geltsdale, and that it does not want them to increase at the expense of other species.

Humanists share anti-racist stance
Published 26 April 2008
WHILE we wholly endorse the anti-racist views expressed by the Christian leaders in their letter (The Cumberland News, April 18), may we, as members of Cumbria Humanist Group, point out that these views are shared by those of us who hold no such religious beliefs – currently the majority of the UK population?
