New Carlisle college plans must be inspiring

Out of adversity comes triumph . . . That’s the hope for Carlisle College bosses as they rethink plans for new buildings.
The original £30m blueprint fell victim to the credit crunch, now they are working on plans for a £10m design. College officials and architects are working against the clock to draw up detailed plans, win planning consent for the new proposals and be ready to appoint a builder by the turn of the financial year.
As the University of Cumbria continues to grow, it is more important than ever for the college to play its part in the education of youngsters in the city and the county. We need a well-educated and inspired youth to make their careers in Cumbria and power the county’s future.
The demand for places is increasing and student numbers have gone up 15 per cent in 12 months.
The collapse of the earlier college scheme wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. It wasn’t universally loved, by any means, but some of the original ideas could and should be retained.
The most vital aspect of any centre of education is always the quality of staff and the college has no worries there. But surroundings also play a big part and it is important that the new-look college looks and feels welcoming and inspiring and is properly equipped to cope with the needs of staff and students.
Despite the shortage of time, educationalists and architects have to be sure they get it right.
We must remember
Where will you be at 11am on Sunday? Waking up? Washing the car? Walking the dog? Preparing lunch? Or at a Remembrance service?
Soldiers young and old will be attending events across the county, remembering fallen comrades and those they never knew but who gave their life in the service of their country.
It is important for we civilians to attend these services too, showing support, that we care, that we remember and that we are grateful.
