FROM September, Carlisle will have just four secondary schools – Trinity, Newman and two new academies.
The two academies will be run together by the same organisation, the Richard Rose Federation.
More than £50million will be spent on creating two new state-of-the-art buildings in Lismore Place and at Morton’s site in Wigton Road.
The central academy replaces St Aidan’s School and North Cumbria Technology College. The second academy replaces Morton School.
Lochinvar School in Longtown has closed, with children transferring to William Howard School in Brampton.
Meanwhile in the west of the county, Ehenside School in Cleator Moor and Wyndham School in Egremont are being replaced by the West Lakes Academy. It will be built on the site of Wyndham School.
As part of the Carlisle re-organisation, Trinity and William Howard will have reduced intakes in future. More than £20million is also being spent on improvements at Trinity and Newman School.
There are changes too in the primary sector.
Belah School in the north of Carlisle has also closed with its catchment being shared between schools in Stanwix and Kingmoor.
Brampton’s infant and junior schools are merging to form a primary, as are the Belle Vue schools in Carlisle.
