Nature reserve work for training centre youngsters

YOUNG learners from a Carlisle training centre have been carrying out conservation work at Watchtree Nature Reserve.

The team from JHP, based in Lowther Street, joined youth workers from the V scheme as part of a series of volunteering taster sessions.

Together they replaced old protective tree casings with wooden stakes to ensure that saplings continue to grow. They also learned about the history of the Watchtree site.

Mandy Mattinson, from JHP’s entry to employment (e2e) programme, said: “We wanted to do something that gave to the community as well as enabling the learners to gain from the day. All those taking part received a certificate to demonstrate they had taken part on the day and some of the learners have already enrolled in the V volunteering programme, in which they continue to accumulate volunteer hours and gain certificates for the time given. The tutors and learners all enjoyed the day.”

Taking part were Libby Blaney, Laura Dixon, Carl Beattie, Danielle Kenmare, Shauna Herd, Sophie Springate, Sarah Taylor, Martyn Cartwright, Sam Hedley, Jillian Skinner, Leanne Barber, Amy Thwaytes and Zoe Mitchinson.

The Watchtree event is one of a series planned by JHP to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
