Concerns over Brampton green group's energy plans

Parish councillors have called a meeting with a Brampton eco-group following fears over plans for a mass renewable energy scheme in the town.

Sustainable Brampton say a 30-acre field on the edge of the town could become the home of the project which could produce enough energy to power the town and more by 2020.

Wind energy, hydro energy and solar power have all been explored as part of the group’s Draft Energy Plan.

But local people have contacted Brampton parish council to express concerns about these suggestions. Now councillors want to speak to the green group about their ideas.

Sustainable Brampton published the plan their website last month. The group have suggested developing the 30-acre field owned by Carlisle City Council at Capon Tree Hill, south of the Brampton bypass. They say the site could house turbines, be used for biomass production, food production or to produce organic fuel.

But Brampton parish council chair Judith Pattinson said local people have contacted her, alarmed at these prospects, put forward by the unelected eco-group.

Mrs Pattinson, said that the parish council want to meet with Sustainable Brampton in the new year.

She told The Cumberland News: “People want to know what is going on.

“They are very concerned because they feel as though there is a process happening and they don’t have any involvement.”

Mrs Pattinson added that the report and its suggestions should be fully debated.

Sustainable Brampton agree the issue should be debated and say intention of the report was to generate dialogue on the issue of renewable energy.

A spokesperson for Sustainable Brampton that the group welcomed the request to meet with the council to talk about energy generation in the local area.

“We have accepted that invitation and will encouraging the council to become involved in discussing the exciting opportunities for the community to become involved in energy generation.

“There are no specific proposals at present, and we want to have a community-wide debate on the possibilities. We look forward to meeting Brampton Parish Council as an important part of this debate.”

Have your say

Don't blame the bankers for this counry's ailments, blame yourselves and the nimby communities we all live in - those who have everything really don't care about groups innovations or desires to actually make a difference - as long as their views, ways of life and seemingly aesthetic qualities are not spoilt by a turbine - at the end of the day, when we have found larger, cleaner technologies (not nuclear!!), just unbolt the damn thing and you (or your kids ) will get the view back! We have future generations to look after as well you know !

A group can plan what it likes - it doesnt actually mean any of it will happen!

A lot of people say global warming has nothing to do with human activity and its all natural - there is proof that the planet does cool and warm in a cycle, but the often ignored bit shows previously its taken thousands of years to change, this time its happening in a few dozen year.
