Outrage at traffic warden attack

CARLISLE City Council has labelled an attack on a woman traffic warden “unacceptable” after she was assaulted by a biker on the city’s busiest shopping street.
The authority said it would not tolerate violence against its staff as police investigated the attack, carried out as the warden ticketed a motorcycle in English Street last Friday.
The warden was allegedly punched by a biker as stunned shoppers watched in disbelief.
Eyewitness reports even suggested some passers-by encouraged the man as a confrontation took place – while nobody was said to have stepped in to intervene. The motorcyclist then rode off from the scene.
Police later arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of assault and appealed for witnesses to contact them.
The city council statement read: “This kind of behaviour should not be tolerated and is completely unacceptable. Parking attendants are public servants and provide a valuable and essential service.”
