Those were the days...

In last month’s Cumbrian Weddings, we asked readers to send in photographs of their wedding dresses from the 1980s and earlier.

We plan to select some to be modelled on the catwalk at The Live the Dream Wedding Event next month.

We’ve already received lots of wonderful photographs, some of which are featured here.

When Carol Harrison (formerly Wales), of Cockermouth, got married to Brian on September 2, 1978, she wore the dress her mother, Gillian, wore when she married Albert Edwin Wales in December 1955.

Carol said: “I loved the dress so much as a child I always vowed I would get married in it.”

The dress was made by her mother’s sister, Elizabeth Burgess, who was also a bridesmaid.

The only alteration needed in 1978 was to take the sleeves up slightly.

Both weddings took place at the same church – St Andrew’s in Penrith.

Jackie (formerly Graham) and Stanley Wilson got married at St Michael’s and All Angels Church, Bootle on July 16, 1977 in a wedding that brought two farming families together.

Jackie is from Bootle originally while Stanley is from Irton, near Holmrook.

Jackie wore a silk nylon trimmed dress with teardrop pearls, a long train and leg of mutton sleeves. She carried a sheath of lilies.

The couple now live in Irton.

Please send photographs with your contact details and the date the dress was worn to: Carol Milnes, CN Event Management, Cumbrian Newspapers Ltd, Newspaper House, Carlisle CA2 5UA. We are particularly interested in seeing more dresses from the 1920s and 1930s.
