Woodland experts have launched an eight-week mission to help nature lovers get the most out of Cumbria’s spectacular autumnal colour displays.
- Slideshow: autumn colours
Forestry Commission staff are now monitoring the area’s key autumn colour hot-spots and rating the colours on a dedicated website at www.forestry.gov.uk/nweautumn.
The online guide aims to help people choose the best time and locations to view autumn colours.
Gareth Browning, forester and leaf-watch co-ordinator, said: “The Forestry Commission leaf watchers check the colours daily and update the website so everyone knows exactly when to go out and see this marvellous natural display.
“We're lucky in Cumbria to have so many places to enjoy the spectacular autumn colours.”
Some of the best woodland venues in Cumbria include Whinlatter Forest, near Keswick, which has larch and broadleaf trees changing colour right now.
The Ennerdale valley hosts larch, beech and oaks along its lake shore, mixed with evergreen spruce trees.
There are autumn displays too at Miterdale valley, near Eskdale, and at Giggle Alley, Eskdale Green, which is a restored Japanese garden that boasts a vibrant red maple display.
Our slideshow captures some of the amazing displays across Cumbria but we're sure you have got some fantastic shows as well.
Send them to us here at The Cumberland News and we'll add them to this slideshow for all to see . . .
