ANNUAL APRIL FAIR SHOW AND SALE OF 836 STORE CATTLE

JUDGES – Friday: Mr Colin Little of The Guards, Ireby. Saturday: Mr Mulgrew of Walney.

Friday’s sale saw a buoyant trade for all types and sizes with customers from all over the UK. The Championship was awarded to a Charolais cross heifer consigned by Messrs Clark of Buckman Hall, Thwaites which later sold for £1000 purchased by the judge. Reserve Champion was awarded to Messrs Tyson of Beck Farm whose bullock later made £680 purchased by Mr Colin Oliver.

Saturdays sale was again a great success with another great crowd. The Championship was awarded to a Blonde bullock from Messrs Ellwood of Evarard Lodge which later sold for £735 purchased by the judge Mr Mulgrew. Reserve Champion was awarded to a Limousin heifer consigned by Mr Hoggarth of Old Hall Farm later selling at £710 purchased by Mr David Barker.

CARLISLE

Friday April 18

EXOTIC BREED SALE

A hugh audience was drawn to the exotic breed sale, when specialist auctioneers brought under the hammer a selection of Mediterranean miniature donkeys from Southern Ireland, Alpacas from local breeders in Cumbria and a dispersal of Llamas from Aberdeen. Breeders and enthusiasts travelled from as far south as Dorset and Cornwall, to as far north as Aberdeen and across from Northern Ireland.

First to enter the auction ring were the Mediterranean miniature donkeys from the Red Oak herd based in Gorey, Ireland, which proved to be a great success with seven lots selling over the 3,000gn mark.

Selling for the top price of this consignment at 4,600gns was Prairie Brae April Mist an original Canadian imported 33” grey jennet. She is a daughter of the noted Circle C Bear Essential and her mother is a daughter of Circle C Desperado. She sold in foal to Old West Limited Edition, a Canadian Champion, and due for June. Her new home is in Gloucestershire for Mr R Overthrow of Woodland View, Newent.

One of the stars of the sale sold for the next leading price at 4,200gns. Circle C Annalise is sired by the multiple Canadian prizewinner Circle C Legend and bred from LN Circle C Anna who is one of the top jennets at Cooke Livestock. Annalise sold bred to LN Dark Void for a late June foal, and goes to north east enthusiast, Alder Bradford of Knitsley Mill, Co.Durham.

Two lots sold for 4,000gns, the first was lot 1 into the sale ring Cyders Ruby Queen an attractive dark red jennet. Her breeding on the sires pedigree carries the great Foxworthy line and her mother is a daughter of the brown Sunset Acres Tuffy jack. Ruby Queen travels south into Dorset for Mandy Baughan of Crist Church.

Mandy Baughan also secured the second entry to sell for 4,000gns. Circle C Miss Ellie, a daughter of the 1999 Grand Champion at the World Miniature Donkey Show MGF Future Link, and bred from a daughter of the 29” grey dun Desperado sire. Miss Ellie is just turned 3 years old and is ready to breed.

The next consignment to enter the sale ring were the Alpacas from Alpacas of the Lakes and Lakeland Alpacas who are based local at Eden Park, Renwick, Penrith.

The top price from this entry were three lots all reaching 1,800gns. The first lady to enter the ring was Paradise Lady Helen a 7 year old solid mid brown daughter of Blackmore Vale Rupert. She joins the Whitestonecliffe Alpacas of MT & JM Fowler-Jones & Ptrs at Thirsk, N.Yorkshire.

Whitestonecliffe Alpacas also purchased at 1,800gns Paradise Cora a dark brown female.

The third lot to sell for 1,800gns was Paradise Valantina a fawn appolosa daughter of Meadowsweet Barnaby. She was purchased by Pauline Robson of Lanarkshire.

A white female, Larchfield Mavis of Paradise, sold for 1,700gns and was knocked down to Bruce Kemp of Lochmaben, Dumfriesshire, who also purchased at 1,600gns Paradise Lady Shea a solid black female.

Following the sale of Alpacas was the dispersal of Llamas from the Rowett herd based at Bucksburn, Aberdeen. Highlight of the sale was one of the favourites a yearling female called Toffee. A daughter of the herd sire Khan and bred from Amy, Toffee sold for 1,100gns to John Irving of Jedburgh, Roxburghshire.

Following at 620gns was Topsy, another yearling female and a daughter of herd sire Jude and out of Marmalade, she now travels to Cornwall for Brian and Jane Gray of St.Ives.

Tipsy attracted the next leading price tag at 520gns. Another daughter of Jude and bred from Lola who had sold earlier, Tipsy also sold to Brian and Jane Gray of Cornwall.

ALMONDENE SPRING SALE

One of the best herds of Pedigree Holstein cattle in the North of England went under the hammer at Almonds Farm, Preston. The Almondene herd was bred and owned by Frank Lawson who over the years had developed a fantastic herd of Holsteins mainly by the use of herd sires bred from some of the top cows and families in the breed.

Topping the sale was a youthful two year old from the much admired Biddy family. She oozed style and class and must be one to look out for in the future. She was purchased by leading Irish breeder Ivan Robinson owner of the Ravara Herd for 4000gns. After the sale Mr Robinson said “we are trying to build on our recent success in the show ring and this young two year old will fit in perfect with our other champions.”

The Lawrie brothers from Grange Hall, Lanark purchased the second top price for 3,400gns. This was for a daughter of Regancrest Emory Derry from the famous Blackstar Raven family.

Neighbouring breeder J Burrow from the famous Stardale Herd bought a beautiful heifer for 3,100gns. She was sired by Hilltara Midnight who is a grandson of Medway Supreme Maude EX 97 who has won numerous championships over the years.

Selling for 2,800gns was a daughter of the Dairy Event Champion in 2000 Gerdorth Benefit Sarah EX 94. She was sired by Stormatic classified Excellent 90 and giving almost 50kgs. This great young cow now joins the herd of EM & E Pattinson & Son Walby Hall, Carlisle.

Sired by Almondene Nevada and going back to the dam of Boulet Charles was a nice two year old selling for 2750gns. Almondene Classify GP 83 had six generations of Excellent of Very Good cows in the pedigree and now joins the herd of D.J. Hughes Clayhanger Hall, Cheshire.

The sale was also helped by volume buyers from across the country and the Isle of Man. Frank Lawson would like to wish everyone who purchased all the best in the future with the animals.

At the pre sale show the judge awarded the Championship to Messrs WJ Irving & Son of Burnside, Dalbeattie for an eleven month old Charolais bullock which later sold for £880. The Reserve Champion was awarded to Messrs Nairn of Cumleys, Nethermill for a Limousin bullock which sold for £700. Out with the show cattle bullocks sold to £920 for a pen of Limousins from Messrs W Walker & Son of Lammonbie and to 185.3p/kg for Limousin bullocks from Messrs JA Vevers of Chapelhills, Waterbeck. Heifers sold to £870 for a Limousin from Messrs J&D Glendinning of Bridge End, Eastriggs and to 168.4p/kg for five Charolais from Mr A McGregor of Relief, Ecclefechan.

556 bullocks averaged 149.3p/kg and 457 heifers averaged 142.1p/kg

OPENING SPRING LAMB SHOW AND SALE OF PRIME CATTLE & SHEEP – 86 spring lambs, 89 prime cattle, 4,804 prime hoggs and 3,803 cast ewes & rams

The single lamb championship was awarded to a Cheviot lamb from Messrs Kennedy, Westerparkgate which scaled 52kg and realised £100 to the judge Mr Booth on behalf of B Riley & Sons, Dunnockshaw. The second went to A Hoggan, Maryholm for a Charollais at 57 kg selling for £86and third to Mrs Hutcheon, Maulscastle for a Suffolk at 56kg selling for £85. The pair championship went to A Hoggan, Maryholm for a pair of Charollais lambs which scaled at 43kg and realised £86 to A Dawson for B Riley & Sons; second to D Martindale, Lands for Suffolks 48kg selling at £92and third to Mr Jones, Ashcroft for Suffolks 53kg selling at £82.

Texels to £84 Gill Farm.

The lambs averaged 175p/kg.

Clean cattle were the dearest trade of the season with a top price of 181.5p paid by M Wharton Meats Ltd for a Limousin bullock from J & N Blaylock & Son, Hallburn. Heifers were in short requirement selling to 166.5p

Another large show of hoggs for a large ring of buyers which ensured well fleshed types upheld recent rates to average 139.5p, to a top of 172.1p

Lightweight hoggs were again a good show with well fleshed types easily sold.

The cast ewes and rams had more buyers operating and trade was again easier on the week.
