The general trade for all cattle was very strong and as always it is nice to see new buyers attending the market on busy days. Good quality and stronger cattle were dearer than previous sales, although surprisingly younger cattle did not rise as much. A large entry of cows and calves sold extremely well to local purchasers. Richard Maxwell, Howside sold the pick of them with Belgian Blue cow and heifer calf at £1,240. Earlier in the day a small entry of store cows met the dearest trade yet averaging £600 (including dairy bred) and sold to £775 for a Limousin from Gordon West, Stargill. Black and White feeding cows sold to £650 for a cow from Phil Braithwaite, Ehenside. An excellent entry of calves and stirks found plenty of buyers for both continentals and younger black and white calves which were far better to sell than expected.
