TOTAL FORWARD 352 prime cattle, bulls and cows; 2682 prime sheep were forward.
Messrs Blake of Halfway Well sold a Limousin cross bullock for 173.5p purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Messrs Dodd of West View bullocks topped at 171.5p for a Bazadaise bullock purchased by Pioneer Foods. Messrs Hetherington of Old Hall Farm bullocks topped at 882kg 152.5p £1345.03 purchased by Mr Charles Kirkpatrick. Bulls once again met a brisk trade. Messrs Wheatley & Son of Home Farm bulls topped at 188.5p & 181.5p for British Blue purchased by Mr Mike Atkinson and Mr Alan Jones. Mr Wilson of Reddings bulls topped at 178.5p for a Limousin cross purchased by Mr Mike Atkinson. Spring lambs were the best trade seen yet with a lot of lambs over £100 and the whole sale averaging £89.62 per head and 191.3p/kg. Top price per head was £120 for Texel lambs from Mr George Gate of Hollins Farm, Eaglesfield purchased by Mr John Blacklock on behalf of Mr RJ Harrison (Butcher) Wigton. Top price per kilo was 250p for Texel lambs from Messrs Watson of New House, Welton also purchased by Mr John Blacklock on behalf of RJ Harrison. Hoggs sold well with nice Cheviot and Texel types regular 170p to 185p.

John Watson, Outgang returned to the prime ring with some style selling a top class Limousin heifer at 186.5p/kg to Geoff Riley, Skinburness. Heifers averaged 164.89p/kg. In the prime bullock section Messrs Craghill, Hemplands, topped out at 169.5p/kg (£939) again to Geoff Riley. Commercial prime cattle were also considerably dearer selling to a top of £963 for Holstein bullocks from Humphrey Thompson, Springfield Farm. A small entry of bulls were dearer again selling to 128.5p/kg (£870) for Friesian bulls from Mark Messenger, Adamgill, purchased by Tom Bradley, Egremont. Butchers lambs sold to £115.50 (210p/kg) for a pen of 55kg Suffolk X Lambs from M/s G Wilson, Aldoth Farm, purchased by M/s Wilson, Egremont. Top pence per kilo 236.7p/kg or £106.50 for a pen of 45kg Texel X lambs shown by R W Almond, Irton House also purchased by Messrs Wilson, Egremont. This week all classes rose in value, spring lambs by 13.17p/kg, hoggs by 3.46p/kg & cast ewes by £4.48 per head. Top price per kilo in the spring lamb section went to Messrs G & J Foster, Waitby Farm whose pen of Suffolk x sold to R Skelton for 195p. The clean cattle lacked the quality of late but still sold at very high rates. Bullocks sold to a top of 175.5p for a Limousin from J C & D Nicholson, The Gill, others to 174.5p, 172.5p, 169.5p Dashwellgreen, 169.5p Fenton Farm & Hallburn. A massive show of hoggs were forward for May and were dearer on the week selling to a full ring of buyers all keen for well fleshed hoggs of any weight. The sale was topped at 204p/kg for Beltex from Messrs Stoddart, Hillside and to £91.80 for Texels from Dunjop. The overall average was 156.2p/kg.Lightweight hoggs were another large show and were dearer on the week with well fleshed types keenly sought after. The top of 176.6p for Beltex from Messrs Gill, Newlands and to £59.20 for Cheviots from Sockbridge Hall.The 111 spring lambs averaged 180p and sold to a top of 200p/kg for Texels from Mrs J Marshall, Hermitage.A larger show of cast ewes and rams saw all classes again dearer to average £45.91 overall.

Trade was similar to last weeks strong market. Bulls were the dearest seen for some time with Black and Whites rising around 10p per kilo.The top price of the day was 193.5p per kg paid to for a Limousin Heifer which was shown by T Pearson & Son, High Plasketlands, Mawbray and purchased by Gavin Little, Penrith which also realised the top price per head for heifers of £1135.85.Steers sold to per 184.5 kg which was paid to J Watson & Son, Outgang, Branthwaite, Cockermouth for a Limousin cross. The top price per head for Steers was £1319.04 which was paid for a British Blue shown by J Dixon & Son, Lesson Hall, Wigton. The top price for Bulls was 171.5 per kg for a Limousin cross Bull which was shown by JG & M Little, Greenhill Farm, Wigton. The top price per head was £1324.62 paid for a Charolais Bull shown by DA & SM Miller, Crookdake Mill, Wigton.An increased entry of lambs with a range of quality on offer a better trade than last week. Plenty of lambs 44kgs – 48 kgs in excess of £100 per head and several vendors averaging well over the three figure mark.More lambs required to satisfy the strong trade and buyers requirements. Double could easily have been sold this week.
