URUGUAYAN forward Fabian Yantorno emerged as the new hero of Gretna fans last night after making a spectacular home debut for the Borderers.

The stylish 23-year-old South American was given a standing ovation by the crowd at Raydale Park as he was subbed near the end of the 2-0 win over the Welsh champions.

Yantorno capped his performance with a brilliant through ball to set up fellow striker Colin McMenaman for his opening goal in the first half.

David Graham grabbed the second after the break as Gretna continued their preparations for the SPL against opponents who will be taking part in the European Champions League qualifiers.

Yantorno, who played for Uruguay Under-20s and Under-17s, was picked up by Gretna’s recruitment guru Mick Wadsworth during a summer scouting trip to South Amerca.

Besides his skill on the ball, he also showed an impressive workrate.

Former Carlisle United midfielder Paul Murray was a second-half substitute last night as he moved nearer full match fitness.

Fellow summer signing Abdul Osman also featuired in midfield by ex-Carlisle United keeper Tony Caig is still unable to play because he is contracted to Vancouver Whitecaps.
