New traffic orders for Keswick by Easter

TWO experimental traffic orders could be in place in Keswick town centre in time for Easter.A DRIVER had to be released from his car by firefighters on Sunday night after it overturned in Workington.

The schemes include new orders preventing traffic from entering the Market Square between 10am and 6pm, and a pedestrian priority rule for Station Street and St John’s Street.

The Cumbria County Council plan received the backing of Keswick Town Council last Thursday.

The council had previously set up a working group to look into the scheme.

The permit scheme, which allows loading and unloading during daytime trading hours, will be scrapped, and extra loading bays will be provided in Derwent Close and at the rear of Woolworths.

Deputy mayor Andrew Lysser said: “The current system is unenforceable, but the new regulations mean the police and traffic wardens could enforce the scheme.

“We are not the only town in this situation and shops and businesses will have to make allowances.”

The experiment will last for 18 months, but can be reviewed after six.

The pedestrian scheme for Station Street and St John’s Street was one of three suggestions put forward by traffic engineers.

But trader Alan Dunn, who runs the Open All Hours store in St John’s Street, said the scheme was “not a solution.”

Two crews attended the incident in Park Lane at around 9pm.
