Pub future still uncertain

THE fate of the Old Red House pub on King Street in Workington remains undecided.
The pub’s licence is under review by Allerdale council after complaints from its neighbours.
The complaints from King Street residents include late night noise, parking obstructions and people using their property’s drive as a toilet.
But Allerdale council’s licensing panel, which met on Friday, said a decision should be adjourned for two months to allow the authority to come up with measures to resolve the problem.
The grounds for the application include the prevention of crime and disorder, the prevention of public nuisance, public safety, and the protection of children from harm.
The panel could have chosen to take no further action; issue formal warnings to the premises licence holder; modify the conditions of the licence; exclude licensable activity; remove the designated premises supervisor; suspend the licence for a period not exceeding three months; or revoke the licence.
King Street residents Steven Bragg and Gary Messenger, who were at the meeting, both said noise levels had improved since the pub’s extension had been sound-proofed.
Mr Bragg said: “There have been major improvements.”
Mr Walker has also added a gate between the street and his bottle bins.
This followed concerns from Mr Bragg that the bottles could be used as weapons and posed a risk to public safety.
Mr Messenger said: “Mr Walker has made efforts but my main concerns are still noise from the bottle bins, loud music and customers drinking on the street.”
Specialist environmental health officer Sian Tranter said: “We will make arrangements to establish if there is a problem with noise levels.”
