WORKINGTON police say a new crackdown on shoplifters in the town is proving a success.

The police launched Operation Light Fingers last week in a bid to create a high-profile police presence in the town centre in the run up to Christmas.

There will be an increase of uniformed and plain-clothed officers around town.

Police are targeting shoplifting offenders while working with CCTV operators from Allerdale council.

PC Carolyn Orr said: “The operation has been going really well. We initially found property from eight stores in the town, which has all been returned to them now.”

Police said the operation followed concern about the high number of purse thefts throughout the area over the last month.

It will be run until after Christmas.
