SIDDICK residents now have eight community allotments – all provided by local young people.

MOBEX, the mobile youth group, has created the allotments with funding from Allerdale council, Cumbria County Council and Home Construction.

The young people, some of whom were completing their Duke of Edinburgh silver awards, have transformed a derelict site.

MOBEX will retain one site for a project which will see young people being encouraged to grow produce as part of a healthy eating programme.

Howard Knudtson, MOBEX spokesman, said Duke of Edinburgh trainees from Abbeytown were joined by local youngsters including Workington secondary school pupils.

The group has been given 100 sleepers from the Eskdale-Ravenglass railway and plans to use them to build raised gardens for the elderly.
