Prestige night for diners

A CLUB in Cockermouth hosted a prestigious dinner night.COCKERMOUTH Speakers Club held its 2008 Speech and Evaluation Topics contest last Thursday.TWO Allerdale schools have been awarded Healthy School status.
The Cockermouth 41 Club, for former Cockermouth Round Table members, hosted the annual 41 Club Red Rose Dinner.
The event, which covers all the 41 clubs for Lancashire and Cumbria, took place at the North Lakes Hotel in Penrith, only the second time that the event had been held outside Lancashire.
The event was organised by 41 Club secretary Mark Child, chairman John Brettle and members Garyth Orton, Roy Swindells, David Harrison and Brendon Cook.
Guest speakers were Drew Cochran, National 41 Club president and local wit Howard Nicholson.
Mr Child said it was a unique night for the Cockermouth 41 Club.
A charity collection raised more than £500 for the Great North Air Ambulance.
The winner of the evaluation contest was Malcolm Bobbitt, with Peter Hodgson as runner-up.
Sue Brice was winner of the topics contest and Vic Emmerson was the runner-up.
The club had three members of the Annan club as judges and the chief judge complimented the club on the standard of the performance in both competitions.
All Saints CE School, Cockermouth and Ewanrigg Junior School, Maryport were among 13 from Cumbria accredited at a ceremony at Rheged, near Penrith, on Tuesday.
The schools were rewarded for their efforts in developing health-related activities including personal, social and health education, physical activity, emotional health and wellbeing.
