OVINGHAM Middle School have won the West Tyne Cup for the first time in several years.
Having beaten a weak Bellingham team largely consisting of year sevens, they stunned Hexham by beating them 3-1 in the semi-final.
This set up a final against St Joseph’s, who had already beaten them 2-0 in a league match.
Under the floodlights at Prudhoe High School, they played with strength and commitment to lead 2-0 at half-time, with goals from Ben Dryden and one direct from a corner by James Blackburn.
A scrambled goal early in the second half gave the team a 3-0 lead.
With 10 minutes remaining and no substitutes, Harry Mahon was injured, essentially reducing the team to 10 men.
This allowed St Joseph’s back into the game, but with a little luck and some good defending, the team ran out 3-0 winners.
