Striker Gareth Arnison grabbed a hat-trick as Workington Reds crushed Frizington White Star 7-1 to clinch a spot in the quarter finals of the County Cup.
Two long-range rockets from Anthony Wright stunned White Star, while and Kyle May and Dan Robinson wrapped up the scoring.
Boss Darren Edmondson named himself in the starting XI and gave some of his reserve team a chance to impress. Aussie Chris Hayton, who is hoping to secure a deal at Workington, also started.
The match didn’t start to well for Workington as they fell behind after four minutes. A poor clearance by Phil McLuckie was picked up and Alan Blair bundled the ball home from close range.
However, McLuckie made amends for his error by threading a throw ball for Arnison a few minutes later. The striker turned his marker and rifled the ball in off the far post to level.
Midway through the first half Reds took the lead. Wright picked the ball up 35 yards out and belted the ball into the top corner with Michael Harvey in the Frizington goal rooted to the spot.
Reds should have extended their lead on 27 minutes when Adam Maine failed to convert an Wright cross.
On 40 minutes it was 3-1. Wright stood over a free-kick wide on the right and his wicked curling shot flew into the net. Harvey got a hand on it but the power took the ball past him.
In the second half Wright went looking for his hat-trick but his goal-bound shot on 46 minutes was well saved by Harvey.
Frizington were dogged in their defending but some of their tackles left a lot to be desired. Billy McMullen was lucky not to be booked a few times for sliding in late. Then a late lunge by Gareth Travaskis’s on McLuckie saw him pick up the first booking of the match.
Arnsion could and should have extended the lead but he hit the bar from the edge of the box and a minute later dragged a shot wide. And on 67 minutes he did when he smashed home from a Wright corner.
On 70 minutes Maine and Hayton were replaced by Kyle May and Shaun Vipond and it was May who netted the fifth. Gari Rowntree crossed and May headed the ball in from four yards.
Dan Robinson scored the sixth on 84 minutes when he latched onto an Arnison through ball.
One-on-one with Harvey the youngster slotted it into the corner of the net.
With just four minutes left Arnison completed the scoring and his hat-trick when he cooly knocked the ball in from a corner.
