Carlisle man fined - for showing car parking permit in 'wrong' window

A driver has been left fuming after a traffic warden slapped a ticket on his car when it was parked outside his own house.

Graham Shaw has a zone B permit to park outside his Myddleton Street home, which he keeps on view in the passenger-side window of his car.

He appealed against the parking ticket, issued outside his home on November 1, but that was turned down by the city council because the permit was not visible within the front windscreen area.

He said: “As I’m a resident in Myddleton Street, you can imagine my surprise.

“I am angry, but I’m also completely confused as to why it has happened and why they won’t listen to reason.

“There’s no chance I’m paying.

“I have got a valid resident’s permit, which is clearly displayed.”

Mr Shaw, 34, keeps his parking permit in the side window of his Toyota Estima so that his front window remains uncluttered.

But despite this, he said that the permit is in clear sight.

He said: “I like to keep anything in my windscreen as minimal as possible, it’s just be one less thing with the potential to obstruct my view.

“We got the car at the end of March, and have had the permit in the window where it has been since April, and I have never had an issue with it until this.

“Looking at the pictures taken by the parking attendant it seems as though he or she has deliberately avoided the permit displayed.

“If they had pointed 10ins to the left it would have been in display in the picture.”

A spokesman for the city council said: “As no parking permit, disc or disabled badge was on display within the vehicle’s windscreen, a Penalty Charge Notice was issued.

“An initial appeal was put forward and dismissed.

“Mr Shaw has now submitted a further challenge and this is in the process of being considered.”

The fine is £50 which is discounted to £25 if paid within 14 days.

Have your say

The increase in petty bureaucracy and tunnel vision by it's operatives will ultimately lead to civil unrest. Look to history for the proof of this. For God's sake wake up city council!!
