Nermark and Nieminen quit Workington speedway

Riders Daniel Nermark and Kauko Nieminen have hit Workington Comets with a double whammy – just a day after the shock news that legend Carl Stonehewer was being released.

Nermark is not going to be fit for the start of the season in March and won’t ride at Derwnt Park next season and skipper Kauko Nieminen has opted to go Elite League.

It means that with Stonehewer being allowed to join another club, Workington are left looking for three heat leaders.

New reserve Richard Lawson is the only rider signed up for 2009, although owner Keith Denham expects to announce two more signings by the weekend – although neither will be a heat leader.

Denham said: “This has really come out of the blue. We had an indication that Kauko might consider the Elite League in 2009 but when there was no doubling up for a rider above an eight point average he had to make a straight choice.

“He has decided to sign for Lakeside next season to concentrate on the Elite League.

“The real shock was Daniel. I had no idea there was going to be a problem until he told me he wouldn’t be fit for the start of the season. It will be some time in April at the earliest before he would be ready.

“However we’ve since found out that he is to ride in Sweden and Poland next year and it just looks as if he is going to give Britain a miss.

“He suffered a bad injury, which needed an operation but when he was at our presentation night there was no hint that he wasn’t coming back.”

“It’s left us in a spot because we have to fill three key positions now and as a result are scouring the world,” said Denham.

Have your say

I would like to thank Kake for all his efforts in Comets colours, you are a real gent,a superb rider and we will miss you!

Sorry to here about Daniel.

This has obviously given Keith and Ian a problem, especially afterlosing Carl and Joe. Rise to the challenge fella's !

The worrying aspect though is the perception that riders appear to be choosing other teams over the Comets!

Ive booked Mr Denham an appointment at specsavers because he doesn't know a good thing until he's lost it. We got some silverware for 2008 all we will be getting in 2009 is tupperware. Good luck to 3 of the best!
