Late Douglas strike earns Penrith a point

PENRITH picked up a point in a hard-fought encounter played in bitterly cold conditions which culminated in a snow-storm.

The home side took the lead after 18 minutes when Minto crossed for Johnson to convert with a fierce shot which Holland parried, but was unable to prevent from entering the net.

Penrith found it hard to create clear-cut chances, but on 34 minutes they were back on level terms.

A clever piece of play by Graham Anthony saw his shot take a deflection and the goalkeper was unable to hold the ball.

Then, a twisting run by Dean Douglas, playing agaist his former club, saw him cross to the far post, where Willie Paul’s shot was smothered by the keeper at close range. Then a fierce free-kick by Mark Birch was headed over the bar by a defender.

Penrith started the second half slowly, finding it hard to exert any pressure.

On 69 minutes, West Allotment went ahead when Blaylock was adjudged to have conceded a penalty which Keith Douglas coolly converted.

Only then did the Cumbrians up the tempo and start to create chances. Having gone close twice, Penrith equalised with just three minutes left.

The home defence failed to clear a corner and Dean Douglas rifled it home from the edge of the area to earn Penrith a point.

Penrith: Holland, Birch, Gray, Thornton, Robertson, Blaylock, Paul, Anthony, Reed, Robinson, Douglas. Subs.Jones, Taylor, Wilson, Lea, Frampton.
