Edmondson backs players to grind out result at in-form Tamworth

Boss Darren Edmondson reckons Workington Reds can beat the odds and pull off an FA Trophy shock at Tamworth today.

That’s despite The Lambs being the form side in Blue Square North – with an unbeaten run of 15 matches.

The bookies rate Reds at a massive 5-1 long-shot to win the tie but Edmo is backing his boys to grind out a result.

He said: “Once the game gets under way then stats mean nothing. We know it will be a tough match and Tamworth are a very strong team.

“Last time out we scored four goals away from home and being a couple up with not long left you would have put your money on us to win the game.

“Unfortunately that wasn’t the case and we showed a bit of naivety by not closing the game out. The lads will have learnt their lesson.”

Edmondson will be without midfielder Craig Johnston, who is starting the first game of a three-match suspension.

Johnston was shown a straight red card in the 2-0 defeat to Vauxhall Motors two-weeks ago.

The gaffer is also hoping that he can secure a deal to bring Shaun Vipond to the club full-time.

The 19-year-old has been on-loan from Carlisle United but his three-month deal expired last weekend.

Australian midfielder Chris Hayton has been training with the club this week and is likely to be tested out in a few reserve team games before any decision is made on his future.

Lee Andrews is having a scan on his knee on Monday. The defender needs to have an operation next month to correct an uncomfortable cartilage problem.

Edmondson said he is likely to be out for at least a month, he said: “It will be a blow to lose Lee and fingers crossed it will be a straight forward operation and he will be back early next year.”

Likely lineup: Collin, Hewson, Rowntree, May, Andrews, Robinson, McLuckie, Hopper, Jonny Wright, Arnison, Anthony Wright
