Travelling boots

I WAS going to start this column by talking about the different cultures in Workington Reds’ dressing room now that the Australian midfielder has bagged himself a trial at the club.

That was of course until I stumbled over an online fallacy – Lee Andrews was not born in Trinidad and Tobago.

I know it is hard to believe. Lee, with his Caribbean looks and calm temperament, was in fact born in sunny Carlisle.

Don’t blame me for that information, blame that trustworthy website that is wikipedia.

So with Lee just another Englishman this leaves 20-year-old trialist Chris Hayton to fill Reds’ foreign quota this season. If he makes it through his trial.

The young Aussie is likely to have played in the Reserves last night and his move to West Cumbria is not quite conventional.

Chris is stopping with his grandfather in Distington and went to Borough Park armed with DVDs that showcased his skills.

He has been playing at a similar level of football back in his native country and moved here in a bid to make it in the sport. He is likely to be short of match practice because he hasn’t played since August when his season in Sydney ended.

The reserve fixtures will hopefully get him back to a decent level.

Another one of Darren’s squad that is trying to get himself super fit is Jonny Wright.

The striker is running in next year’s London Marathon in memory of his brother Richard who died two years ago.

It was truly inspiring listening to him talk about his brother and why he has chosen to run the London Marathon next year. (See page three for full story)

Jonny is an inspiration to us all and I urge everyone, not just Reds fans or football fans, to sponsor him. Log on to www.justgiving.com/jasonpascoe and donate some cash.

Club director Alec Graham said that they would support their player and help raise some cash.

He said: “I had no idea about what had happened to Jonny. We are all proud of him, he is a very nice lad and we will help him in whatever way we can.”

It isn’t going to be easy tomorrow. Tamworth are probably the best team seen at Borough Park this season but with good away points from top of the table sides it is not beyond the squad to bring a replay back.

It won’t be easy without Craig Johnston and Shaun Vipond – as I write he has still not decided to join Reds.
