AT THEIR latest meeting, Stocksfield Local History Society welcomed professor John Cannon who spoke on Landscape and Capability Brown who was one in a line of great landscape artists of the English style, a tradition from 1720 that was characterised by the appearance of beautiful nature. Capability Brown was born in Kirkharle and took his inspiration from the countryside of Northumberland. Illustrating his talk with slides, professor Cannon described Brown’s life from childhood. Brown learned his craft at the big estates, and his schemes created for the great gardens involved the large scale movement of earth, the creation of lakes and which took many years to reach maturity, often beyond the life of the landowners.
