CUMBRIA’S junior golf team defeated the University of Manchester by six matches to two in a friendly. The match was arranged through Oliver Smith, an ex-Cumbria junior and now at the University of Manchester.
Both teams were not at full strength – Manchester had three missing from their team which finished third in the World Student Matchplay in Germany in the summer - but the quality of the golf was still of the highest order.
Dan Park (Kendal) halved his match with Troy Scott, and Jamie McDonald (Kendal) also halved his match with Oliver Smith after being three up with five holes to go. Ben Mahon (Barrow) won his match with Ian Chadwick on the 18th green, Chris Thursby (Eden) had a crushing victory, 8&6, against Mike Skerrit and Oliver Carr (Ulverston) used his home course advantage to win 3& 2 against a very good player in Tom Brown.
Jordan Harrison (Grange over Sands) came good in the last 9 holes to beat Adrian Johnson 4& 3 and rookie Ryan Pearson (Whitehaven) in his first county match worked hard for his 2& 1 victory over Sujab Sangari. Cumbria's only defeat was against young Joe Price (Ulverston) by the excellent Matthew Chapman 2&1.
