Council to test school patrol spy cameras

CUMBRIA County Council has agreed to test spy cameras to catch motorists who ignore school crossing patrols.

The cameras, contained in the sticks carried by lollipop men and women, will be given a trial in Barrow. If successful, they could be used throughout Cumbria.

The images would be used as evidence in court cases.

The county council’s cabinet approved the experiment last week among several measures to boost recruitment of crossing-patrol staff.

Cumbria should have 91 lollipop men and women, but 35 posts are vacant.

The council will run a campaign to target aggressive driving around crossing sites.

Its local committees will also be urged to provide staff with gloves with long sleeves for use in cold weather.

Schoolchildren will enter a competition to design posters highlighting the role.
