Workington Comets boss aims to bring in four new riders

Despite the fact that Workington Comets have just completed the most successful season in the club’s history boss Keith Denham has promised changes for 2009.

The Best Pairs, Premier League Fours and first-ever seven-man trophy – the Young Shield – were all won, but Denham is setting his sights even higher.

After the best season in Comets’ 38-year history the owner wants to raise the bar and insists he won’t rest until the major trophies – Premier League title, Knockout Cup or Premier Trophy end-up at Derwent Park.

They finished fifth in the league; were runners-up in the Knockout Cup and missed out to Edinburgh in their group of the Premier Trophy.

So how is Denham going to beef-up his squad for the 2009 season?

He said: “I’m looking at bringing in four new riders next season and we’ll be ready to move just as soon as we know the team averages at this week-end’s BSPA annual meeting.

“The first of the new riders will be introduced to the fans at Friday night’s presentation evening and I imagine the others will follow fairly soon after that.

“Although we had a decent season – with three trophies – there were certain aspects of the team I wasn’t happy about and which I am determined to put right for next year,” he says.

Workington’s team building was thrown into confusion last year after second string Craig Branney broke his leg badly at the Telford ice spectacular in February, and Scott Smith was hurriedly signed before the season started a month later.

“I don’t want anything like that to happen this time. I know accidents can happen anywhere but the team we put together over the next few weeks will be the one that goes out for the opening match in March,” he said.
