Maryport Dolphins Girls, which was set up to teach girls the sport and improve their fitness, has used the grant from The Co-operative to buy essential equipment, including footballs, kits, training bibs, water bottles and first aid kits.

Chairman Bridget Smith said: “We are playing in the local league and the girls are really enjoying it.

“Not only does the team help them to keep fit and healthy but it also encourages team-building and leadership skills. We would like to thank The Co-operative for its support.”

The donation comes from The Co-operative’s Community Fund, part of The Co-operative Group’s membership share of profits scheme which allows Co-operative members to donate all or part of their twice-yearly payouts to worthy causes.

The Co-operative’s regional secretary, Suzanne Heron, said: “The Community Fund can make a real and lasting contribution to local communities and we are delighted to have made this award to Maryport Dolphins.”
