Then and now in pictures

HOW much has Workington changed?

The pictures from ‘then’ were loaned to the Times & Star by Reg McCallam, of Workington, and were all taken in the late 1960s or early 1970s – and our photographers have been out and about snapping the up-to-date views.

Reg, who lived at Moorclose, died recently aged 78. He had a keen interest in cinema and worked as projectionist at all four of Workington’s picture houses from 1946 to 1963. He had an encyclopaedic knowledge of the cinema, theatre and musicals.

I remember going to that movie House with my friends.

Ramsdey Brow and Bridge Street photo - when it was in the paper it was dated 1968, but surely there were more houses right up to the late 70's? I remember a Bridge Street being a narrowish road with the houses (pictured) on one side and Toggies where the courts are now?
