Ward’s critics should look at Spurs fiasco

HERE’S something for disgruntled Carlisle United fans to consider next time they’re calling for the head of manager John Ward.
Exactly a year after Martin Jol was sacked by Spurs, the Londoners are winless and nailed to the bottom of the Premiership after their worst-ever start since 1912 – the year the Titanic sank.
I bet Spurs fans wish the Dutchman was still in charge.
Juande Ramos arrived at White Hart Lane as one of Europe’s finest coaches, but now his reputation and his club are unravelling in front of his eyes after an alarming downward spiral since winning the Carling Cup last season.
Meanwhile, Jol is in charge at Hamburg, currently three points clear at the top of Germany's Bundesliga.
Jol guided Spurs to fifth place in his previous two seasons but, after a disappointing start last campaign, was sent to the gallows by a board of directors who showed about as much backbone as a bowl of custard.
It just goes to show that changing the manager does not automatically guarantee a change of fortune.
Ramos is now under pressure more than ever before but if some of the finest minds and greatest coaches in the game are unable to awaken this sleeping giant, it makes you wonder who can.
