Whitehaven's new Aussie play-maker is in town and hoping to follow up his NL2 league winners medal with a matching piece of silverware from NL1.
Former Gateshead Thunder star Dan Russell moved to live in Whitehaven with his girlfriend last week and is raring to go for the start of the league campaign next year.
Although he has not had the best of welcomes from the West Cumbrian weather over the weekend he likes what he sees of the area and at the Recreation Ground.
He has met up with the club’s assistant coach David Seeds but is yet to meet the majority of his new team-mates.
“I am loving it so far,” said the versatile half-back/hooker. “I knew Saia (Makisi) that was here last term and he said it was a great club.
“With how they went last year, that was an indication that good things are to come.
“I won the NL2 competition last season at Gateshead and I would love to add the NL1 medal to my collection and hopefully stay injury free and be consistent.”
Russell broke records during his time at Gateshead and he was crowned NL2 player of the season at the end of the term.
He broke the club’s points-in-a-season and goal-scoring records as the Tyneside outfit marched to the title and promotion.
And although he says he is not too bothered about any of the opposition in NL1 he is looking forward to getting one over on his old club.
“I am definitely looking forward to playing them,” he added. “I would like to break some records at Whitehaven too but we will just have to wait and see how it goes.”
