Great year for county RL refs

THE Cumberland Rugby League Referees’ Society enjoyed an outstanding 2007/08 season, claims chairman Tony Johnson.
Rugby Football League-graded officials within the society refereed or ran the touch at a number of nationally important games.
Gareth Hewer refereed the Senior Academy Grand Final, and Paul Grundill was a touch judge at the NL1 Grand Final.
Other CRLRS officials who ran the line at big games wereGordon Wallace (Northern Rail Cup Final) and Brian Armstrong (Junior Academy Grand Final).
Armstrong was also reserve touch judge Northern Rail Cup Final and Peter Wharton was reserve touch judge at the Junior Academy Grand Final.
Other Cumberland officials – David Slattery, Trevor Dryden and Jamie Martin – regularly officiated at National Youth & Academy League level.
Johnson said: “Members of the society stretching from Barrow-in-Furness to Carlisle regularly officiate at Super League, National League, National Conference League, National Youth & Academy level as well as the Carla and West Cumbria Youth and Junior Leagues. This shows the commitment and dedication of our members.
“Anyone wishing to get involved within the society and start officiating, be it at grassroots or getting on to the RFL’s Match Officials Performance Pathway, can do so by contacting the RFL’s match officials development officer, Peter Wharton.”
