Penalties needed to settle two cup ties

THREE second-round ties in the Sunday County Cup went to extra-time and two of those had to be settled on penalties.

Red House Rovers beat Vine Bar 5-4 from the penalty spot after their tie had finished 3-3 and it was also 3-3 between Thornhill and Bransty in an all-Egremont League clash. Thornhill took the shoot-out 4-3.

Kieran Johnstone, Chris Peacock and Craig Dowling had scored for Red House, with Darren Studholme, Shane Surtees and Craig Williams responding for Vine Bar.

Alan Humphreys, Gareth Humphreys and Terry Lobb netted for Thornhill with Mark Callan, David Colley and Ryan Cornish on target for Bransty.

The game that was settled after extra-time without the need for penalties was The Well against Gosforth Red Admiral.

The Well conjured up a winning goal in the added 30 minutes to book their place in the third round.

Andrew Little (2), Mark Blackwell and Peter Chambers scored for the Well with Danny Smith, Kevin Kirkham and Martin Byrne responding for the Red Admiral.

Letters Inn were on the receiving end of a 12-0 hiding at Mirehouse where there were goals for Mark Irving (5), Ryan Smith (2), John-Ryan Milburn, Martin Thompson, Liam Moore, Ben Smith and Michael Grayson.

Also in double figures were Bluebell and Captain Nelson.

Bluebell beat Glasson Rangers 11-1 with goals from Dave Hill (4), Rob McDonald (2), Will Bowe (2), Graeme Lamb (2) and Dale Hooper.

Captain Nelson were 11-0 winners at Miners Arms with goals from Gary Pearson (3), Chris Dawes (2), Neil Scholey, Adam Tinnion, Nick James, Stuart Pettitt and John Fidler.

By contrast there were three extremely tight contests with Flimby edging out Kells FC 2-1 and Senhouse Street winning at St Bees by the same score. Kit Horns edged through 3-2 against Lowca Pirates in the all-Egremont clash.

Lee Burkes and Darren Wilson scored for Flimby while Wayne O’Neill netted for Kells.

Gary Hunter and Terry Wharrier were the match-winners for Senhouse Street while a Paul Curtis hat-trick did the trick for Kit Horns..

Former Sunday County Cup winners Bounty crashed-out, beaten 4-0 by a resurgent Deer Orchard. Keith Skillen (2), Nat Mitchell and Daniel Burns scored the goals.

Grasslot Welfare were on the receiving end of a 4-0 scoreline, beaten at home by Cleator Moor but unfortunately no scorers are to hand.

Northside, who lead the Workington Sunday League’s Premier Division, were 7-1 winners at home to Whittington Cat.

Gareth O’Leary (2), Kyle Galea (2), Michael Pickering, John Price and Michael O’Leary netted for Northside. Ryan O’Pray scored for the Cat.

Red Lion got through 5-1 against Salterbeck as Malcolm Graham (2), Richard Hudson, Paul Cuthell and Daryl Creighton scored the goals.

They scored all the goals in fact because Andrew Brown put one into his own net for Salterbeck.

FC32 made the third round draw with a 5-2 home win over Dearham Commercial.

Tom Pardini (2), Greg Quayle, Scott Pears and Stuart Gray netted for FC32. Joe Brown and Gavin Manchester replied for Dearham.

Two ties were postponed and will be played this Sunday: Moor Row v Borough FC and Top House v Yankees.

Other fixtures – President’s Cup round two: Dearham v Bluebell, Bounty v Salterbeck, Flimby v Senhouse Street, Captain Nelson v Letters Inn, Grasslot Welfare v FC32, Red House v Northside, Red House Athletic v Red Lion.
