Joanne and Gail on song in the big one

BREAKING into the upper echelons of equestrian sport in Britain really isn't easy, and you only have to cast your eye over the results of this year's Horse-of- the-Year Show to see the truth of that. Again and again, the same names appear in the top ranks.

Round the bend: Amanda Saville driving Mac and Munch

However, it was heartening to see several local names as well, notably Joanne Bell, with J C Prinz Amor, and Gail Smith, with Zaffarin Z, who came fourth and ninth respectively in the BSJA Amateur Championship.

Melissa McCarron and Kec Bustino put in a more than creditable performance in the Squibb and Davies National Junior Foxhunter Championship to take 25th place.

Meanwhile in her first season of driving scurry, Amanda Saville managed to qualify two of her pony pairs for HOYS, taking the multi-skilled Neeps & Tatties as her large pair and Mac & Munch as the very eye-catching small spotties.

There were two heats in each class through the week, culminating in the Championship on Saturday night. Amanda was placed in every heat, and qualified both pairs for the Championship.

She finished fifth in the final with Neeps & Tatties and eighth with Mac & Munch - a serious achievement at the end of her first year in scurry competition against seasoned professionals!

Back to more local matters - and this coming season could be a good one for ex-racehorses in Cumbria.

Kingwater and Greenlands have both agreed to stage special classes for members of the Scottish and Northern ex-racehorse club, a group which sets out to prove that.

Thoroughbreds can go on to lead an active and very useful life after their careers on the track have finished.

Kingwater has agreed to stage a special Showing class as part of its Trailblazers series, starting on November 16, and will go right through to the national finals.

Greenlands is still working on the details, but it's likely to involve its winter unaffiliated points. Watch this space for more!

Blackdyke also has exciting news for those taking part in its unaffiliated winter show jumping championships - the Newcastle based supplement manufacturer Equine Products is coming on board as main sponsor for both the pony and horse sections.

Both Championships will run from October 2008 to April 2009 and are open to current members of the Blackdyke Farm Competition Club.

The top 10 combinations in both Championships will receive generous prizes from Equine Products UK.

Fashion and horses aren't often bracketed together.

But the Cumbrian committee of the BHS has decided to change all that with a special Fashion Show, co-ordinated and supplied by Slacks Equestrian Supplies featuring the latest ranges of riding, competition and safety wear for men, women, children and even horses. It's being staged at the Tebay Railway Club on October 23.

The evening also includes a Pie and Pea Supper (at a cost of £4.50 which must be booked in advance from Libby Bateman on 01768 341863 or 07759 665233) and a Celiidh, with music by Chris Bland.
