Let’s hope Seve‘s greatest battle has a happy ending

IT’S going to be the toughest challenge of his life, but let’s hope Seve Ballesteros’ legendary desire to succeed pulls him out of life’s rough after revealing he has a brain tumour.

Ballesteros, left, wasn’t just a great golfer, he was a sporting legend and inspiration. It says everything about the Spaniard’s popularity and his standing in the game that golf fans and fellow players are so saddened by his illness.

It’s been sad to see the decline of the dashing, charismatic winner of three Opens and two Masters.

And his illness certainly renders Europe’s defeat by the US in last month’s Ryder Cup, or question marks over Nick Faldo’s captaincy, as utterly irrelevant.

It would be really fantastic if Ballesteros recovered and was able to fulfil his dream of captaining Europe at the next Ryder Cup.
