Heavyweights in CN Group awards showdown

Three of Cumbria’s most respected companies will battle for the title of Business of the Year (Large) in the CN Group Business Awards 2008.

Amey LG Cumbria, the Cumberland Building Society and Westmorland Limited will contest the category, sponsored by Invest in Cumbria.

The award are run by CN Group, publisher of the News & Star, and sponsored by Business Link Northwest and Invest in Cumbria.

Amey LG Cumbria provides support services for local government, including highways maintenance and educational support.

The company is headquartered at Penrith and operates depots across the county.

The Cumberland Building Society is Cumbria’s largest independent financial institution.

The firm has motored on serenely despite one of the toughest climates in living memory for banks and building societies, recording profits last year of £6.01m.

Westmorland Limited began life when the developers of the M6 motorway approached John and Barbara Dunning, of High Chapel Farm at Tebay, with a view to building the six-lane highway through their land.

The Dunnings worked with the developers to minimise the impact and kept some of the land on either side of the motorway to open a small service area.

Today, Tebay Services is still Britain’s only locally owned and run motorway services

The company is now overseen by the second generation of Dunnings and has become a multi-sited operation employing more than 500 people in six businesses.

Winners will be announced at a ceremony at Rheged, Penrith, on October 30.
