Harraby dig deep to beat Colliers 5-1 away

Northern Alliance Premier Division: Ashington Colliers 1 Harraby Catholic Club 5: The early stages of the game saw Harraby keeper Geoff Bennett block an angled shot from Patrice Butters and then Marc Shiel had a close range effort blocked by the home keeper as their defence scrambled Mike Swift’s follow-up effort away from the goal-line.

Harraby then began to get on top and after Lee Otway had a header saved, Rob Bainbridge saw his shot beat the keeper but come back off the far post before James Earl’s 15-yard drive from the rebound was cleared off the line by the overworked home defence.

The deadlock was finally broken on the half-hour mark when Ashley Combe's cross from the right saw Earl control the ball and place his drive from the edge of the area into the far corner.

The lead was doubled within four minutes when Otway headed a clearance from Bennett on for Bainbridge to rifle home from the edge of the box.

There was a flurry of goals in the early stages of the second half as Otway rose highest to head Earl’s free-kick from the right home.

Richard Brown then replied for the home side by striking a 30-yard belter into the top corner in the 57th minute before another reply from Bainbridge in the 59th minute who pounced on a short back pass to place his shot beyond the keeper from within the area.

Otway completed the scoring in the 65th minute to complete an excellent team performance when Alan Casey's through ball allowed him to pick his spot past a static and demoralised home keeper.

Harraby CC: Bennett, K. James, Combe, Wallace, Coulthard, Swift, Shiel. Earl, Otway, Bainbridge & Casey. Subs: Blake, E. James & Lamonby.

Ponteland United 4 Carlisle City 1

Carlisle City endured some horrendous traffic problems on their journey across the A69 and only arrived for their away fixture at Ponteland United ten minutes before the anticipated kick-off schedule.

The hold-ups in their journey appeared to have a destabilising effect on the depleted City squad that showed five changes from their previous game and they soon found themselves three goals down after 26 minutes.

Scott Fenwick put the home side ahead from the penalty spot in the 15th minute and five minutes later Glenn Ford added number two.

City were still not switched on as Fenwick broke through to net his second in the 26th minute and three minutes before the break he completed his hat-trick from another penalty.

At the beginning of the second period City at last began to find their feet and had the better of the second half exchanges.

Peter Cawson reduced the leeway in the 64th minute but City's luck deserted them as efforts by substitutes Steve Bell and Robin Wood both hit the woodwork that in reality summed up their eventful day.

Carlisle City: English, Simpson, Rooke, Yallop, Foster, Milne, Wilson, Mather, Cummersky, Heath, Cawson & Burton. Subs: Wood, Kelleher & Bell.
