Hawick 1 Gretna 5: Gretna returned to league action with a win away at Hawick in terrible playing conditions.
In the first half Gretna played into the driving wind and rain and fell a goal behind after six minutes when Andrew Hamilton headed into the net, leaving the visitors stunned.
However, they were soon galvanised into action and Dan Carmichael nearly equalised within 30 seconds, his shot just going wide.
The goals came soon after.
A Tony Nicholson shot was parried by the Hawick goalkeeper only for Dan Rayson to step forward and slot the ball home.
Less than a minute later Dan Carmichael beat the offside trap to make it two.
On 24 minutes, Carmichael nearly got his second when he went round three defenders but his chip over the keeper was just centimetres too high.
The third goal came on the stroke of half time with a free kick just outside the Hawick box.
A lay-off to Steven Rudd ended with a powerful shot which the goalkeeper got his hands too but could not divert it from going into the net.
At half time, with the gods favouring the home team, the wind and rain dropped, denying Gretna the advantage that Hawick had in the first half.
Nevertheless, Gretna dominated the game with keeper Jamieson hardly being troubled.
Ross Johnston scored another two excellent goals including a 35-yeard screamer which seemed to go through the Hawick keeper’s hands.
The home side grabbed a late consolation after an uncharacterisic mix up in the Gretna defence, Michael Smith’s shot being deflected in.
However, the game was well and truly over by then.
