Walsh has been asked by another Town hero James Pickering, to be his number two on the Australian Fijians' British tour.

The Australian Fijians are taking on Town at Derwent Park on November 30, and will be coached by former Town prop Pickering, who is also the AFRL president.

“I was trying to get over to Workington next March,” said Walsh, talking to the News & Star from his Australian home.

“But then Jimmy Pickering asked me to accompany him as assistant coach to the Australian Fijians and I am hoping to come over.

“I would absolutely love to meet up with everyone again at Town. I caught up with Martin Oglanby and Jonty Gorley when they were out in Australia with the Cumbria team a couple of months ago.”

Walsh remembers his time at Town with great fondness and still keeps in touch, recommending players to current boss Dave Rotheram.

“Mike Cunningham is a good friend and I keep in touch with Dave Rotheram, who I knew before,” added Walsh.

“Still, the first thing I do of a weekend is check on the Workington results.”

Pickering, under the guidance of head coach Peter Walsh, helped to guide Workington into the inaugural Super League, during their time at the club.

Town won the divisional premiership final back in May 1994 with Pickering one of the key men in the victory over London Crusaders at Old Trafford.

That took them into the top flight of rugby league and Town finished ninth in the Stones Bitter Championship to see them included in the very first Super League.

A dinner is being planned at Derwent Park on Saturday, November 29 to welcome the touring side.

And it is expected that at this event the vice president’s club will take the unique opportunity to welcome Pickering into the club’s Hall of Fame.

Tickets will be available for all supporters on a first come, first served basis.
