The firm, which helped design the Mike Wilde Eco Centre at Cockermouth School, was crowned 2008 Consultancy of the Year by industry bible Contract Journal.

Philip Collard, WYG’s business development director collected the award from BBC TV news presenter Emily Maitlis.

He said: “We have enjoyed a fantastic 12 months and have won some prestigious projects as well as a string of national awards.

“To win yet another national award is further evidence of the quality, commitment and dedication of all our staff across the WYG family.”

WYG, which employs 3,200 staff in more than 30 offices around the world, has been involved in a number of key Cumbrian regeneration projects.

Recent schemes include the £4m eco-centre at Cockermouth School, decommissioning work at Sellfield and a £1m revamp of Whitehaven’s Beacon Centre.

The company is also involved in a £3m project to transform industrial estates in west Cumbria.

The work will improve entrances and exits to the sites at Leconfield, in Cleator Moor, and Bridge End, Egremont and overhaul infrastructure like roads, signs and markings.

Extra plots will also be developed so the sites can be expanded to attract new businesses.

In addition, WYG has been appointed to help deliver up to £20m-worth of housing and regeneration.

A four-year contract has been awarded by social landlord Home to look at the provision of additional social housing stock and regeneration in the Cumbria region with an estimated construction value of £15m to £20m.

The contract should see the building of about 90 homes across five or six schemes in the region with the potential for another 80 to 100 units across future schemes expected in 2009-2010.
