Full programme of fixtures at last

THE best week since the start of the Tesco Cumberland County League started back in August saw a full programme of fixtures.

Silloth went down 4-0 at home to Mirehouse as Seffan Scott and Gary Gibbons scored one each and Andy Murry hit two.

Aspatria scrapped a narrow 1-0 victory over Longtown as Ben Gregory hit the solitary strike in a close encounter. The win keeps Aspatria in touch with champions Nether hall.

Wigton Harriers found that Salterbeck are starting to hit form as they went down at home by 3-2 but no scores have been sent in.

Cockermouth went down at home to champions Netherhall as Karl Fillingham netted both in his side’s 2-0 victory.

Cleator Moor Celtic hosted Frizington Whitestar, who appointed a new manager just 24 hours before the game.

Herbert Briggs, manager at Workington Reserves, has joined the Whitestar camp and he took control for the first time on Saturday only to see his side fall 2-1 behind in the first half.

Micheal Lewis was a thorn in their side for the first 45 minutes, added Briggs, whose side was given a lifeline with a Dean Rodger goal just before half-time. But in the second half Whitestar fought back to win 5-2.

The club wasn’t so happy later though when an appeal to overturn a deduction of six points was rejected.

Windscale met Whitehaven AFC in the AP&J Brown Divisional Cup first leg and the visitors take a big advantage into the second leg as they ran out 6-2 winners.

Scores for Windscale were Lee Stainton and Steven Miller while Wayne Collins (2), Steven Graham (2), Stephen Priestley and Luke Smith netted for Whitehaven.

Goals from Gareth Cuthbert, Darren Armstrong, Daniel Brough, Dean Thompson and Steven Rainford gave Hearts of Liddlesdale a 5-1 lead over St Bees in their first leg game, the Saints consolation strike coming from Ryan Turnbull.

St Margaret Mary’s drew 1-1 with Bransty Rangers.

The CVR Whitehaven Cup tie between Whitehaven and Carlisle City was finally played, City progressing with a 2-1 win.

Olly Driver put City ahead but Paul Atkinson drew Whitehaven level to take the game into extra time in which City’s Tony Harrison hit the winner.

It is County Cup this weekend and as a rule the league don’t have fixtures on cup weekends but with so many games lost already because of poor weather some league games will be played.
