Wrestling suffers as weather washes out two events

THE appalling summer weather continues to take its toll of the wrestling events.

Last weekend, another two events were lost with the cancellation of shows at Borrowdale and Whalton. Another casualty this weekend is the show at Langholm. But two events did go ahead, the Crab Fair at Egremont and Thropton Show about 100 miles away in the North East.

At Egremont the disappointment was the lack of local wrestlers as this is an event where we have come to expect a good number of youths willing to have a hold.

While entries were hardly overflowing the sheer quality of the wrestling was there in bucket loads.

Two wrestlers dominated the juniors and two dominated the seniors. James Hayhurst had too much experience and know how for the Clark boys in the under-12s and added another win to what is becoming an impressive tally for the season.

Joe Thompson wrestled to form as he took control from the start in the final and never let his man off the hook. He then went on to complete a double by taking the hold off the bigger Jack Ewart and driving forward off the right side.

The loss of one fall to a cross buttock did not deter him from his game plan.

In the Seniors Richard Dixon knew that if he was to have any chance of winning he would have to clear a way past John Harrington the opportunity coming earlier than expected when they were paired together in the semi- final of the lightweights.

An outstanding was decided in Dixons favour when he demonstrated his amazing athleticism with a reverse twist while ensuring he finished on top.

The final was a more routine affair as he hiped his way past the Wasdale youngster Craig Naylor.

After that Richard Fox took over though he in turn had to pull out the stops to account for Richard Dixon , John Harrington and the local heavyweight Carl Clark.

As well as winning the 13 stones and the All Weights he also picked up the award of the Guinness Trophy, judged by Bill Knowles, for the most meritorious performance in the days wrestling.

Meanwhile, over in the North East the cancellation of Whalton Show meant that Thropton Show had the day to themselves with a number of the Rothbury Academy youths and a sprinkling of locals providing the entertainment.

Stars of the show were young Charlie Carlisle with a double in the youths, and Ross Wilkinson following up his All Weights win at Whitfield with the two heavy classes here.

This weekend the action is at Eskdale in the Western Lakes with the highlight the under-15 championship with Scott Brocklebank of Kendal out to defend his title though there should be a good number of youngsters out to wrest the title from him.

It should be well worth the journey to see it.
