Senior service as Cumbrians land top prizes

CUMBRIAN riders continue to prove they can shine even without the sun. The Carlisle contingent snatched all the senior honours at the Haydon Hunt Hunter Trials at Hexham.

Ruth Hewitson and Mego Lego took the Restricted Novice, Andrew Otto and Rebel Gift took the Novice, then Ruth and Andrew together lifted the Pairs, leaving Richard Nichol to win the Open with Medicinal Purpose.

Jon Fletcher had two excellent wins at Osbaldeston on Chemo Z - taking both the 1.20 and 1.30 Open classes. Rarely far behind in the ribbons, Gail Smith came second in the 1.20 on Zaffarin Z. Alan Hadwin kept the Cumbrian flag flying with a win in the Discovery class.

Greenlands staged another in its successful series of BSJA Intro shows, especially designed to encourage newcomers to affiliated jumping.

Mark Davidson claimed a brace of wins - taking the 80cms Open on Master Ben and the National Amateur I.00m on Prince Concorde - a right royal event since Julie Nuttall was just behind in second place on Prince Phalian.

Matthew Stonehouse and Matjestic just missed out on top billing in the 80cms Open, but made sure of the credits in the National Amateur 90cms.

Emma Wilson kept the honours at home in the British Novice with Greenlands Hindsight - and Caroline Charters put in a neatly efficient performance on the eye-catching Rourke Star to claim second place.

Denise Richardson continues her successful run with Rachel Walker's Velica, riding the mare to first place in the Novice 22 Unaffiliated in Blackdyke's latest Dressage show.

Penny Williamson and Lowmoor Chantilly took first place in two restricted classes, while Terri Graham took three firsts - one with Pic O'Day, the others with Ten O' May.

Cumbria's leading western rider Debbie Jackson is having an amazing season with her pretty five year old palomino mare Peppy's All Gold.

The pair went to the East Coast Circuit Quarter Horse Circuit Show at Horse Creek Farm in Cambridgeshire and filled their boots to overflowing with rosettes and trophies, winning six firsts in Junior Trail, Novice Amateur Trail, the National Snaffle Bit Association Junior Trail, Novice Amateur Showmanship, Amateur Trail, and Novice Amateur Trail.

As one of the 10th highest trail scores over the last two shows, Debbie and Peppy were invited to take part in the Gala Championship Trail Class.

Debbie says it was an amazing experience - with the stewards appropriately dressed in dinner suits! She was delighted to come joint-eighth with professional trainer Lee Rutter.

Before the show, Debbie and Peppy were standing third in the Novice Amateur Trail standings, after the first four shows through the season. They won the Novice Amateur Trail on day one, and the pressure was on, as they moved to the lead in the rankings, but with three people within four points.

Debbie says she knew they had to win to stay ahead and it was a really tense moment.

“We were second from last to go, in our class on day three, and we had had to watch the other competitors go in the 30 to 40 minutes before us,” she said.

“ When it was our round we put in a really good performance over a technically difficult course.

“One competitor who was within a couple of points of me was last to go.

“But she broke gait in a very difficult trot through serpentine, and touched a cone in a backthrough.

“ We won the class, and also the East Coast Circuit Novice Amatuer Trail Circuit Award, for the highest rankings through all six of the shows. We were presented with a lovely bronze trophy.'

Just to finish a wonderful show, Debbie then took the runners-up spot in the Novice Amateur Showmanship Circuit Awards, and won the Brian Carter Memorial Award, as the highest ranked Rookie after the six shows in the circuit.

And the Novice Amateur All Around Award, for the novice Amateur Competitor with the highest points.
