The final match is known as the snowball because the surplus funds that have accumulated each week the snowball failed to be won.

This season no-one won it so there was around £700 pounds in the kitty. Prizes were shared out amongst the top 10 places.

Several anglers lost large fish early in the match but Tom Myerscough, 17, hung tightly on to his and, along with two bream and a tench, weighed in with 22lb 14oz and a £120 prize.

Others: 2 Nick Oliver 21lb 11oz; 3Ian Corri 9lb 10oz; 4 Alan Edmondson9lb 7oz; 5 Tony Whear with 8lb 9oz.

Alan Routledge topped 24 other anglers to win the Carlisle and District Coarse Angling Club’s Crofton Challenge match for the second year in succession last Sunday.

Alan used carp tactics with a boilie wrapped in paste to land two carp for 21lb 4oz. Second was Andy Davidson with two carp and two skimmers for 19lb 6oz. Third was Carlisle tackle dealer Peter Wilson who landed a single carp for 8lb 2oz.

The River Eden big salmon season continues.

While fishing the lower Eden last Saturday, Brian Rowland of Butterton, Staffs, landed the 14th 20lb salmon; a 23½lb cock fish from the river Eden this season, what is even more amazing is that this was only Brian’s second ever salmon and he had landed his first, a 4½lb grilse less than an hour before the big one.

Brian was fishing with AAPGAI instructor Glyn Freeman who just after the fish had been landed put Brian on the phone to me, as Brian was speaking, describing the capture of his first two salmon, both taken on a Flying C.
