Elbra and Red Rose make Cumbria Cup semis

DAVE WHITWORTH snapped up a deadly double as holders Ellenbrough sent Seaton crashing out of the Barla Cumbria Cup.

The 28-0 victory puts Ellenborough into the semi-finals where they will meet Broughton Red Rose. Kells and Hensingham will contest the other tie.

Kevin Clarke put Ellenborough in the driving seat after 15 minutes with a try converted by Eddie Robinson.

Then, before the break, the home side collected tries from Whitworth, Shane Ackerley and Paul Southward, the latter two both converted by Robinson.

The second half was a quiet affair but Ellenborough managed more points through a Robinson penalty and a second try with 10 minutes to go from Whitworth.

Red Rose saw off the challenge of Distington by 40-18.

Tim Taylor ran in a brace of tries for Red Rose, to go with one apiece for Jonathan Ritson, Matthew Jackson, Dale Semple, Wayne Bell and Bryan Park. Mark Walker rounded off the scoring with six goals.

Distington replied with a try each for Nicky Cook, Adam Conway and Nicky Burgess, who also tagged on two goals, with one more from Clayton Sutton.

Kells also earned a home tie in the semi-finals, after they got the better of Cockermouth 34-10.

It was still tight at half-time with the Whitehaven outfit having a slender 12-4 advantage.

But they pulled away in the second half to confirm the win with a brace of tries for former Haven centre Andrew Nelson.

Carl Sice confirmed his return to the amateur ranks with a touchdown, alongside tries for Kevin Agnew, Steven McGrady and Shaun Flanagan, with six goals from the boot of Tony Burns.

Cockermouth crossed for two tries, courtesy of Daniel Rourke and Gavin Howarth, with one goal from Richard Bowe.

Hensingham ensured it would be an all Whitehaven semi, with a convincing 70-28 demolition of Ulverston.

It was closer at half-time with Hensingham just ahead on 24-10 but they ran riot in the second half.

There were braces all round for Gavin Maudling, Reece Fox, Jamie Glasgow, Lewis Salmon and Jonathan Hutchinson.

Craig McAvoy added a try and two goals, with Richard Morton and David Cartmel also touching down. Jamie Sharpe was on target with seven goals.

Steve Richardson bagged two tries for Ulverston with one each for Mark Dixon, Dan Toal and Dwayne Bell, the latter also adding four goals.

The semi-finals will be played on October 18.

In the John Smiths Cumberland League division one, the only match saw Wath Brow come through in the second half to get the better of their hosts Glasson by just two points.

Glasson led 20-12 at half-time but the Hornets switched the game around late on to record a 24-22 victory.

Tom Sharpe crossed for a brace for Wath Brow, with further tries for Adam Ramsden, Neil McCartney and Adam Corlett. Mark Barwise slotted over two goals.

Glasson’s points came courtesy of a try and two goals from Greg Rowley, and a try apiece for James Moore, Matthew Johnson and Lee Taylor.

In division two, Lowca were victorious over Seaton A 36-10 with Lee Allen still in top try scoring form, adding another two to his season’s tally.

Gary Johnstone, John Sparks, Dave Colley, Tony Tinkler and Craig Dolan joined him on the try scoring sheet with Dolan also landing five goals.

For Seaton A, tries came courtesy of Ian Wilson and Gareth Messenger with Matt Dixon adding one goal.

Kells A had a convincing 64-14 victory at the expense of their hosts Salterbeck A.

Ethan Scowcroft, James Herbert, Daniel Joyce, Ricky McGuinness and David Agnew all ran in braces for Kells, with Liam Moynes and Chris McKee also touching down. Ross Gainford tagged on eight goals.

Salterbeck A had a hat-trick hero in their ranks with David Wilson bagging three tries and Alan Murray adding one goal.

Frizington were also victors by a wide margin, when they took on Lowca A and ran out 44-16 winners away from home.

Peter Fowler collected a hat-trick for Frizington with David Dodgson crossing for a brace and adding six goals for a 20-point personal tally. Paul Bradley, Stuart Graham, Shaun Dixon and David Vaughan also touched down.

Lowca A saw two tries for Simon Milligan, one for Gary Haile and goals for Nicky Anderson and Billy Dalton.

Salterbeck just edged a tight game at Flimby to bag the two points on offer with a 14-8 scoreline.

Flimby went over for a try in both halves through Carl Grima and Tony Eve but could not find the edge to see off their visitors. The boot of Lee Jardine made the difference as he converted Salterbeck’s two tries and added a penalty. The try scorers were Ross Cape and Dan Riddick.

Great Clifton got some points on the board when they drew their home clash with Maryport A, both sides finishing on 28 points.
