CAPTAIN NELSON, a new name in the Workington Sunday League this season, produced the performance of the round in the League Cup.

They scored a late winner at Northside to edge a first round thriller 4-3.

Premier Division Northside had scored through Andrew Mitchell, Gareth O’Leary and Calum Doyle but it was the Second Division side who got through as Adam Tinnion (2), Gary Pearson and Ben Byers provided the finishes.

Seven goals in that cliff-hanger but incredibly there were more goals in four of the other ties.

Flimby actually beat FC32 by the odd goal in nine as defences certainly weren’t on top.

Substitute Darren Wilson was the hero for Flimby as he came on and scored a hat-trick. Scott Lawson and William Fox were also on the mark.

Ben Gregory (2), Greg Quayle and Stuart Bell scored for FC32.

Salterbeck were the day’s top scorers as they beat Red House 10-1 with Barry Hodgson (4), John Dakers (3), Sean Scott (2) and Scott Weston all enjoying themselves in front of goal. Luke Dustin scored the Red House consolation.

Bounty were clear-cut 8-0 winners at Well FC but unfortunately no goal-scorers have been passed onto the League secretary.

Dearham might have been in trouble at a buoyant Senhouse Street Club but came away with a very good 7-2 win, although their keeper Barry-John Denwood came to their rescue on a number of occasions.

Joe Brown (2), Gavin Manchester (2), Jason Ackerley, Sean Smith and Kevin Cosgrove got the goals for the villagers with Mark Kilgour and Mike Kilgour responding for Senhouse Street.

Miners Arms, Workington collected their first win of the season when they beat Glasson Rangers 3-1 with goals from Lee Hodge, Gavin Taylor and Andrew Bezuszko. Andrew Renwick netted for Glasson.

The seventh first round tie was settled by penalties after Letters In and Borough FC had fought-out a 2-2 draw.

Tom Gardner and Andy Hinde scored for the Letters with Daniel Pape and Tom Allison replying for Borough.

In the penalty shoot-out that followed extra-time Borough won 4-2.

Bluebell have already advanced to the third round because they were able to play their second round tie at Deer Orchard and won comfortably 6-1.

Kevin Connolly (3), Stephen Graham, Ben McGlasson and David Hill scored the goals. Keith Skillen netted for the Orchard.
