The hosts bounced back from 12-0 down after nine minutes, stand-off Scott George, of Distington, claiming 14 points from a try and five goals.

West Cumbria coach Alan Davidson said: “Saddleworth caught us out with two quick tries.

“They were fired up as they wanted to be the first side to beat West Cumbria.

“This was the first time we had played together in a competitive game, and it took us a little while to find our feet.

“It’s obviously a steep learning curve for the lads. But once we got sorted out we played some nice football.”

Davidson added his thanks to Workington Town are allowing the match to be played at Derwent Park.

Ben Swift, Jon Ritson and Adam Ramsden also crossed for the hosts, while Wath Brow’s Karl Olstrum, playing at scrum-half, was their man-of-the-match.

West Cumbria, launched with cash help from Cumbria Community Foundation’s 0 to 19 Fund, travel to Ince Rose Bridge on Sunday.

They are next at home when they play Siddal at Whitehaven’s Recreation Ground on October 5.
