Eighteen West Cumbrian amateur rugby league stars are set to take on the might of the South African Rhinos, after being named in the new county side.
They are joined by nine South Cumbrians to make up a training squad ahead of the big clash next month at Craven Park.
John Smith’s Cumberland League champions Ellenborough have four in the side, with three from Egremont, Wath Brow and Broughton Red Rose.
They are joined by one apiece from Cockermouth, Glasson, Kells, Maryport and Seaton.
The squad will now start training in earnest under coaches Gary Charlton and Martin Oglanby.
And they will take on the touring South African Rhinos on October 8 in Barrow.
A number of the players impressed selectors in the recent county trial match between the Cumberland and Barrow District Leagues.
They will join some more experienced heads in the squad, all hoping to earn selection for the match.
Then on Friday, October 17, two Cumbrians will be vying to step out for their country as BARLA GB take on the Rhinos at Hull KR in the last match of their tour.
Seaton’s Richard George and Craig Wilson from Millom were both selected for the BARLA side, which put them out of contention for the county.
