Gordon's three fish haul on Lazonby waters
Last updated at 12:36, Friday, 12 September 2008
The Lazonby Estate waters had been fishing well up until the heavy rains of the last week.
Gordon Jefferies landed three sea trout between 2lb and 3lb, two caught in Smithy Wath.
Over the years Gordon has also built up an enviable record of big brown trout caught on the Lazonby's Top and Bottom beats and has landed fish to 5lb in the past.
This season was to be no exception. After seeing a decent fish rise in the Caravan Pool Gordon, who was salmon fishing at the time decided to cast a Flying C over it.
This received an instant response from a 4½ lb cannibal brown trout. Other catches at Lazonby included a 15’b salmon to George Knoblett who was fishing a spinner in a high water at Red Scaur.
Patrick Arnold landed a brace of 5lb grilse in the Wicket Pool then two days later landed a 9 pounder whilst fishing the Meadows. Gordon Evans landed a 5lb grilse and Paul Little landed a four-pounder in Smithy Wath.
Another angler enjoying sport at Smithy Wath was Craig Jardine who landed a 3lb 5oz sea trout then followed it with an 8lb salmon. Lazonby Estate Gillie Edwin Tailforth landed a 10½ pounder in the Ivy Tree on a Toby and North East angler Julian Hightree used a blue Shrimp Fly to good effect in Smithy Wath landing a seven-pounder. At Warwick Hall on Friday James Henderson landed a brace weighing 12 and 6lb whilst spinning in the Rushes.
Johnny Griffin landed a 12 pounder in the Gravel Bed whilst spinning and Richard Martin also enjoyed sport in the Gravel Bed landing a 10 pounder on a Flying C. Parkbroom faired well earlier this week whilst most beats were unfishable due to high water levels, two small grilse were landed on Monday and on Tuesday John Garnett landed a 12lb salmon on a large fly fished on a sunk line. Further downstream Dave Ritchins landed a 10lb salmon on the lower Eden using an Autumn Boyo fly.
The Carlisle and District Coarse Angling Club's penultimate summer league match of the season saw 14 anglers get a thorough soaking at Whins Pond on Sunday. In first place was Carlisle's Peter Brown with 17lb 3oz of roach and skimmer bream on the pole from peg 27.
Before the match Pete's game plan had been had been to go all out for the smaller fish, build a bag and ignore the big fish, however on arrival at his peg he was greeted by bream rolling some 60 yards out in front of him which left him wavering about which tactics to choose. Refocusing on the task in hand Pete started fishing the pole targeting the smaller silver fish only to have a large carp roll right in front of him. To cut a long story short with big fish rolling all round him Pete stuck to his game plan and it paid off.
Lesser anglers would have been chopping and changing tactics all day. As it happened those who targeted the bigger bream and carp on the day failed to catch and Pete's tactics were correct. Only second placed John Brooks on the next peg to Pete landed any bigger fish in the shape of two nice tench which together with roach skimmers caught on the pole with paste helped him to a 13lb 11oz total. In third place was Carlisle tackle dealer Peter Wilson with 12lb 6oz of pole caught roach and skimmers.
Pete Brown's win puts him in an almost unassailable position at the top of the league as he goes into the final match of the season at Borwick on September 21, 26 points ahead of his nearest rival.
